Starting thread: Need model for content in NYC

I'm putting together a shibari photography project in New York City and need to find a model who's comfortable with rope bondage work. Looking for someone experienced who knows how to communicate boundaries effectively during sessions. For those of you who've done similar projects here, what's been your approach to finding collaborators? I'm especially interested in hearing about how you handle the initial conversations around limits, safety measures, and what to expect during shoots. Building trust from the beginning seems crucial for this kind of work. If you have advice on vetting potential models or warning signs to be aware of, I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts.

I've done several shibari shoots in the city. First thing is always meet in public first, coffee or whatever. Talk through everything before any rope even comes out. I use a written consent form that lists specific ties we'll be doing, expected duration, and hard limits. References are key too - ask if they've worked with other riggers and actually follow up on those references.

For BDSM content work the negotiation phase is everything. I always do a full day of just talking and maybe some basic ties to see how we work together before committing to a shoot. Also make sure you're clear about how the images will be used - model release forms are a must. Some people are fine with artistic portfolios but not with commercial use.

What kind of rope work are you planning? Floor work, suspension, both? That makes a difference in what kind of experience level you need.

Mostly floor work and some partial suspension. Nothing full suspension for this particular project. I want to focus on the aesthetic and emotional aspects of shibari rather than extreme positions.

That sounds beautiful actually. I've modeled for similar projects. The emotional connection in bondage photography can be really powerful when done right. Make sure whoever you work with understands that vulnerability aspect and respects it.

Check out local rope jams and workshops. That's where you'll meet experienced models who are already in the scene. They'll have their own safety protocols and know what questions to ask you too. Way better than trying to recruit someone cold.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. I've been to a few jams but mostly as a learning rigger. Didn't think about it as a networking opportunity for finding models. Anyone know which venues in NYC are most active right now?

There are regular munches in Brooklyn that tend to draw people interested in rope bondage specifically. Also the shibari community here is pretty tight-knit so word of mouth works well. Just be professional and upfront about what you're looking for. DM me if you want some specific recommendations.

I'm curious about this too. I've been considering modeling for rope content but not sure what the standard agreements look like. What should I be asking for as a model?

As a model you should ask about: usage rights, who owns the images, compensation if any, safety protocols, rigger's experience level and training, whether there will be other people present, and aftercare provisions. Never feel pressured to do anything you're uncomfortable with. Your boundaries matter most in any BDSM context.

Also ask to see their previous work. If they're putting together a shibari project they should have a portfolio or at least practice shots. You want to know their skill level with rope before you're the one tied up.

All good points. I do have a portfolio I share during initial conversations. I've been studying under a rigger here for about two years and have done several private sessions for practice, just not for published content yet.

Two years is decent foundation. Make sure you're confident in your emergency release techniques. Things can go wrong fast in bondage work even with experience.

Absolutely this. Nerve damage is real and can happen quickly. Always have safety shears within reach and know the warning signs. The model's safety always comes first in any rope work.

Jordan

Definitely. I always have EMT shears clipped to me and I check in constantly about sensation and circulation. That was drilled into me from day one of learning shibari.

That's good to hear. You sound like you're approaching this responsibly. If you're still looking in a few weeks message me privately. I might be interested depending on the concept and timing.

Thanks for all the info everyone. This is really helpful for understanding what goes into BDSM content creation.

Just remember that building trust takes time. Rush the process and you'll either end up with bad content or worse, someone getting hurt. The bondage community is small and reputation matters.

Understood. I'm not in a rush. Want to do this right. Appreciate all the feedback here.

On bondage: how did you start?

Good luck with your project. Always nice to see people taking shibari photography seriously as an art form and not just rushing through it.
