Paid vs free shoots

Starting thread: Paid vs free shoots

I'm trying to sort out the whole compensation question when it comes to rope bondage photography sessions. As someone who models for shibari, I keep running into situations where I need to decide between paid work and collaborative shoots. What goes into your decision-making process? Do you look at the rigger's skill level, whether the images will actually be useful for your portfolio, or is it more about the overall experience? I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's navigated both paid and unpaid arrangements in BDSM photography. What have your experiences taught you, and how do you evaluate these opportunities today?

What's been your experience with compensation in rope work?

For me it depends on the experience level on both sides. When I was starting out with rope bondage I did a lot of collaborative shoots just to build skills and portfolio. Now I mostly pay models because I value their time and the physical demands of shibari work. If someone's hanging in a suspension for an hour that deserves compensation.

I think about safety first honestly. A paid shoot doesn't automatically mean safer but it does tend to mean more professional standards. For BDSM work especially I want to know the rigger has proper insurance and references regardless of whether money changes hands.

That's a really good point about the physical demands. I hadn't fully considered how much more taxing suspension bondage is compared to floor work when thinking about fair compensation.

I'm pretty new to modeling for rope work. How do you even bring up the money conversation without seeming awkward? Do experienced riggers usually offer payment upfront or do you have to ask?

Most professional riggers will be upfront about whether it's paid or TF. If they're not clear then you should absolutely ask before committing. There's nothing awkward about discussing compensation for BDSM work, it's actually a sign of professionalism.

In my experience the best collaborative bondage shoots happen when both parties bring something valuable to the table. Maybe the rigger has an exhibition coming up and you get exposure, or the photographer has a specific artistic vision for shibari that aligns with your portfolio goals. If it's just free labor for someone else's benefit then that's different.

That makes sense. So it's really about mutual benefit in collaborative situations rather than one person just getting free work.

Re shibari - what kind of meetups work best?

I only do paid rope sessions now after some bad experiences with TF arrangements. People who don't value your time enough to pay often don't value your boundaries either. Not always but often enough that I made it a policy.

Interesting perspective. I've had mostly positive collaborative experiences in bondage photography but I can see how that wouldn't be universal.

Elena raises a valid point about boundaries. Money creates a clearer professional framework which can actually make BDSM negotiations easier and more explicit. Everyone knows what's expected.

What about when you're building relationships with regular rope partners? Does payment change the dynamic or make it feel less personal? I worry about that aspect with shibari since trust is so important.

Payment and trust aren't mutually exclusive. Some of my longest bondage partnerships involve regular compensation. It actually shows respect for the model's time and skill. DM me if you want to discuss further.

I think I'm starting to see it's really situational. New riggers building skills, experienced professionals, artistic collaborations - they all have different dynamics when it comes to compensation in rope work.

Don't forget to factor in usage rights too. If someone's selling the bondage images commercially then you definitely deserve payment even if the shoot itself was collaborative.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful for understanding how to approach these situations.

About rope: what beginner mistakes do you see most?

Another thing - consider the time commitment. A simple rope bondage shoot might be 2 hours but if you're doing complex shibari suspensions it could be 4-6 hours with rigging time. That should factor into the compensation discussion.

Exactly right. And prep time, aftercare, any bruising or marks that might affect other bookings. All relevant to the conversation about fair payment for BDSM modeling work.

This has been a great discussion. I'm rethinking how I approach both paid and collaborative rope shoots now.

Same here. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences with bondage work compensation. It's given me a much better framework for evaluating opportunities.
