How to get first bondage client

Starting thread: How to get first bondage client

I've been working on my shibari skills for about a year now and I think I'm finally ready to take on my first client, but honestly I have no idea where to start. How did others here make that jump from practicing on friends to actually finding people who want professional rope sessions? I'm especially curious about building trust with someone new since BDSM requires such a high level of communication and safety. Did you start through community events, online platforms, or word of mouth? And what kind of screening process did you use to make sure you and the potential client were compatible in terms of boundaries and experience levels? I'd really appreciate hearing about what worked for you and what pitfalls I should watch out for as someone just starting out.

Thanks for any guidance you can share.

Community munches are your best bet. Build trust first, network second. When people see your rope work in person at practice sessions they'll approach you. Don't rush into paid sessions until you're absolutely confident in your safety protocols for bondage.

I started by volunteering to demonstrate at local BDSM workshops. That got my name out there and people could see my shibari technique. It took about 6 months before anyone reached out for a private session.

Thanks both. How did you handle the conversation when someone first approached you about a paid rope session? Like what questions did you ask them?

First client came from a dungeon party where I was doing demos. Key is consent negotiation. I always ask about experience level with bondage, any injuries or health concerns, what they're hoping to get from the session, and hard limits. DM me if you want my full intake form.

Also important: have your own hard limits clear. Not every client is right for you. I've turned down people who gave me bad vibes even when they said all the right things about BDSM safety.

That's a really good point about trusting your gut. Did you ever have trouble with people not taking the safety side of rope bondage seriously?

JuteGuy

Yeah all the time honestly. Some people think bondage is just about the aesthetic and don't understand nerve damage risks or proper tie placement. Those are not your clients.

Build a portfolio. Take photos at practice sessions with consent. When you go to munches or BDSM events bring a tablet or have an online gallery ready. Visual proof of your shibari skills matters a lot.

Good idea about the portfolio. I have some photos from practicing with friends but wasn't sure if that was too informal.

Those are perfect actually. Shows you practice bondage in real settings not just staged shots.

One thing nobody mentions is liability. I got insurance before taking my first bondage client. There are companies that cover BDSM professionals now. Worth looking into.

Oh wow I hadn't even thought about insurance. That's definitely something I need to research.

Marcus is right. Also have a clear cancellation policy and get everything in writing. The business side of rope work matters as much as the technical skills.

How long have you been practicing shibari? One year seems a bit early to go professional but depends on how intensive your training was.

Mia
06 дек. 2025 г., 12:05

I've been doing weekly practice sessions and took three intensive workshops with experienced riggers. Plus I've been studying safety extensively. But you're right that I should be really sure I'm ready.

Three workshops is decent but maybe offer some free or low cost sessions first to build confidence? You could call them portfolio building sessions for bondage work.

RiggerDan

That's what I did. First five sessions were free in exchange for photos and testimonials. Helped me figure out my process for rope sessions without the pressure of being paid.

Mia
07 дек. 2025 г., 10:07

That's actually brilliant. Takes some pressure off while I build experience with new people.

What style of shibari do you practice? Different styles attract different clients in the BDSM community.

Mia

Mostly Kinbaku inspired, focusing on the emotional connection aspect of rope bondage rather than just decorative ties.

Knotty_Sarah
07 дек. 2025 г., 21:39

That's good. Emotional connection is what brings repeat clients honestly. Technical rope skills can be learned but the psychological safety aspect is harder.

Also network with photographers who shoot BDSM content. They always need rope riggers for sessions. Good way to get your name out there in the bondage scene.

VelvetKnots

Consider getting certified if there are programs in your area. Some shibari schools offer certifications that help build credibility for bondage work.

Mia
08 дек. 2025 г., 12:08

I'll look into certification programs. Hadn't realized that was an option.

Also join online communities specific to your area. There are private groups for rope enthusiasts and BDSM practitioners where people look for riggers. Message me privately and I can point you to some.

And always always always have safety shears within reach during any bondage session. Non-negotiable.

Thanks everyone. This has been incredibly helpful. I feel much more prepared now.

Good luck! The BDSM community needs more thoughtful riggers who care about safety.
