Beginner shibari model looking for work

Starting thread: Beginner shibari model looking for work

I've been exploring shibari modeling for a few months now, mostly with friends who are learning alongside me, and I'd like to start working with more experienced riggers. I genuinely appreciate the artistic and meditative aspects of rope bondage, but I want to make sure I'm doing this safely and professionally. How do other models in this community find trustworthy riggers to work with? I'm particularly interested in learning the right questions to ask upfront about safety practices, how to clearly communicate limits, and what red flags I should watch for. If you've been modeling for a while, what do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?

Great questions to be asking upfront. Safety first always. When I work with new models I always go over their experience level, any injuries or mobility issues, and establish a safeword system before we even touch rope. Red flags would be anyone who rushes through negotiations, doesn't ask about your limits, or makes you feel pressured. Look for riggers who attend workshops and are active in the local BDSM community. Also ask to see their previous work and maybe talk to other models they've worked with. Always meet in a public space first before any session. DM me if you want more specific advice about vetting people.

I started modeling about two years ago and honestly the best advice is trust your gut. If something feels off it probably is. Also never do suspension right away as a beginner model, ground work first until you really understand rope and your body's responses. Ask riggers about their training background and how they handle emergencies. Keep safety shears visible and accessible during any bondage session.

Thanks so much for the detailed responses. The point about talking to other models they've worked with is really helpful, I hadn't thought of that. Is it normal to ask for references in the shibari community?

Absolutely normal to ask for references. Any legitimate rigger in the BDSM scene will understand and respect that request. I've been doing rope work for over a decade and I always offer contact info for previous collaborators without being asked. Also look into attending local rope jams or munches where you can meet people in a casual setting before committing to private sessions. Message me privately if you need help finding events in your area.

I'm in a similar position as OP. How do you handle discussing compensation? Is it weird to bring up payment when you're just starting out as a bondage model?

Not weird at all. Whether it's paid work, TFP, or artistic collaboration, be clear about expectations from the start. Professional riggers respect models who know their worth and communicate boundaries clearly. In BDSM especially, clear communication is everything.
