Starting thread: Searching for model in London studio

I run a small studio in London and am looking to collaborate with experienced models for shibari photography sessions. I've done a handful of shoots previously but want to expand my portfolio and connect with people who understand rope work and are comfortable with this style. If you're a model with bondage photography experience, or if you're a photographer who's successfully found collaborators in London, I'd value your input. What has worked for you in terms of vetting, communication, and setting clear expectations upfront? Safety and mutual respect are non-negotiable in my bookings.

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences.

I've modeled for rope work in London for about three years now. My biggest advice is to have references ready and be transparent about your experience level with shibari. Models want to know you understand suspension points, nerve safety, and have proper emergency scissors on hand. Always discuss boundaries before any session and put it in writing.

What style of shibari are you focusing on? Classic Japanese, more modern fusion, or specific ties? That might help narrow down the type of model you need.

Thanks Sarah, that's really helpful. I always have safety shears and discuss limits extensively beforehand. RopeRunner - I'm interested in classic Japanese style primarily, but open to modern interpretations as well. Floor work and some low-level suspension if the model is experienced with that.

Have you looked into the rope community meetups around London? There are regular practice sessions where you could meet models who are active in BDSM photography. Much better than cold calling people online. You get to see how they interact with riggers and their comfort level firsthand.

I shoot bondage content regularly in London. One thing that's worked well for me is building a network slowly. Start with models who have TF portfolio building experience, make sure you're both contributing value. References go both ways - models should check you out too.

LilyKnots that's a great suggestion, I hadn't thought about the practice sessions as a networking opportunity. Do you know if most of those welcome photographers or is it more for riggers practicing technique?

I'm a model with some rope experience, mostly floor work. Still building my portfolio in this area. What's your approach to compensation? TF or paid bookings?

Alex - it varies by group but most welcome respectful observers and photographers. Just reach out to the organizers first. Some have specific photo nights. And yes, this is where you'll find models who actually understand rope safety and aren't just treating it as another photoshoot.

Nina_V - I'm open to both TF and paid depending on experience level and the scope of the shoot. For established models with strong bondage portfolios, I budget for paid work. For newer models looking to build their rope work portfolio, TF makes sense. Happy to discuss privately if you want to share your book. DM me if interested.

Just want to echo what others said about safety. Make sure you know your nerve pathways, have proper hardpoints if doing any suspension, and honestly consider having another experienced person present for the first few sessions. The BDSM community in London takes safety seriously and word travels fast if someone's careless.

Absolutely agree RedRopeLondon. Safety is paramount. I wouldn't attempt suspension without a rigger present who knows what they're doing, and I always ensure there's clear communication throughout.

What's the studio setup like? Natural light or flash? Some rope work looks better with specific lighting.

Mix of both - I have north-facing windows for natural light and a full flash setup. I find shibari can look stunning with dramatic side lighting to show the rope texture and body contours.

I might be interested depending on dates. I have about two years modeling experience with rope bondage, mainly floor work but some basic suspension. Would you want to see my previous shibari shoots first?

ChloeRose yes definitely, I'd love to see your previous work. That would help us determine if our styles align. Feel free to message me privately with your portfolio.

Re shibari - what kind of meetups work best?

Have you worked with any known riggers in London? That might give models more confidence in your setup. The bondage photography scene here is pretty tight-knit.

I've assisted on a couple of shoots with established riggers but haven't formally collaborated yet. That's part of why I'm reaching out here - to build those connections properly within the community rather than working in isolation.

Appreciate the transparency. Shows you understand this isn't just regular photography. Rope work requires trust and experience. Good luck with your search.

If you're serious about building a portfolio in shibari photography, consider taking some workshops yourself. Even as a photographer, understanding the rope work from a rigger's perspective will make you better at capturing it. Just my two cents.

That's excellent advice KnotMaster_J. I've been considering exactly that - taking some beginner rigging courses to better understand the technical side. It would definitely inform my photography and help me communicate better with both models and riggers.
