Starting thread: Need sub model for rope session in Los Angeles

I've been studying shibari for about six months now and feel ready to move beyond solo practice with static points. I'm looking for guidance from more experienced riggers about finding a compatible rope bottom in LA who's patient with someone still building their skills. What's worked for you when seeking practice partners? I want to make sure I'm approaching this respectfully and prioritizing safety above all else. How detailed should initial discussions about boundaries and physical limitations be? Should I expect to do several clothed sessions first to build rapport? I'd also appreciate any thoughts on red flags to watch for or questions I should definitely ask before arranging a first session. The BDSM community here seems pretty active but I'm not sure of the best approach for someone at my skill level.

Six months is still pretty early for working with a person honestly. Have you taken any in-person workshops yet? Most shibari spaces in LA have practice nights where bottoms and tops can meet in a supervised environment. That's way safer than trying to find someone privately when you're still learning. Always discuss medical history, joint issues, nerve damage history, and hard limits before any bondage session. And yes, definitely do clothed sessions first.

I've done a few workshops but they were mostly solo rope work on bamboo. You're right that I should look for practice nights first. Thanks for the medical history reminder - I hadn't thought about nerve damage history specifically.

The munches in LA are pretty welcoming if you want to meet people in the scene first before doing any rope work. Building trust in the BDSM community takes time. I'd suggest going to a few social events before asking anyone to bottom for you. People will be more open once they know you're serious about learning properly.

As someone who bottoms for rope, I really appreciate riggers who take the time to ask questions like this. Make sure you know basic safety stuff - check circulation, watch for tingling, have safety shears ready. Also be upfront about your experience level. I'm always more comfortable with newer riggers who are honest rather than ones who oversell their skills. DM me if you want to chat more about what bottoms look for in practice partners.

That's really helpful perspective, thank you. The honesty point is well taken - I definitely don't want to misrepresent where I'm at skill-wise.

LA has some good rope spaces that do open practice sessions. You'll find experienced bottoms there who specifically come to help newer people learn. Way better than trying to find someone cold. The shibari community is pretty tight knit so showing up consistently to events will help you build connections. Also look into getting your foundational ties really solid before moving to suspension work.

Not planning suspension anytime soon, just floor work and maybe some seated ties. Appreciate the advice about consistent attendance - that makes sense for building trust.

Good luck with your search. Always respect boundaries and communicate constantly during bondage sessions. The rope bottom should feel comfortable using safewords at any time. If you're looking for specific technique feedback, message me privately and I can point you toward some good resources.
