Where to meet rope photographers

Starting thread: Where to meet rope photographers

I've been wanting to collaborate with photographers who have experience in shibari and rope work, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Have any of you found photographers through local BDSM communities, workshops, or online platforms? I'm particularly interested in hearing what worked for you when it comes to finding someone who really understands the aesthetic and takes safety seriously. Any tips on how you approached the initial conversation or what questions helped you figure out if they were the right fit?

Check out local rope jams first. That's where I met most of the photographers I've worked with. They usually show up to document the scenes and you can see their work in person. Good way to vet their understanding of shibari before committing to a shoot.

I second the rope jam suggestion. Also look for BDSM education events in your area. Photographers who specialize in bondage photography often attend workshops to network. When you do reach out, ask about their experience with suspension work if that's something you're planning. DM me if you want more specific tips.

What about their portfolio? How do you know if someone is actually experienced with rope versus just doing regular portrait work?

Look for technical understanding in their shots. Do they know how to frame rope lines? Can you see they understand the tension and flow of shibari? If their portfolio is all generic boudoir with some rope thrown in as a prop, that's a red flag.

Safety conversations are crucial. I always ask photographers about their emergency procedures and if they know basic rope safety. Had one photographer once who didn't even know what safety shears were. Never worked with them.

That's a great point about safety knowledge. I hadn't thought about specifically asking about emergency procedures.

About rope: what beginner mistakes do you see most?

Conventions and kink events usually have vendor areas where photographers set up booths. You can meet them face to face and see printed portfolios. Plus at BDSM conventions there are often demo areas where rope photographers are shooting live.

Anyone have experience with photographers who are also riggers themselves? I feel like they'd understand the bondage work better.

Some of the best shoots I've done were with photographer-riggers. They get the anatomy of rope and know which angles show the technique best. But make sure roles are clear during the session.

Don't forget to discuss limits and boundaries before any shibari photography session. Even if the photographer comes recommended, you need to be comfortable with their approach. Message me privately if you want a checklist I use.

Thanks everyone. This has been really helpful. I'm going to start with local rope events and see who's active in that scene.

Good call. Building those community connections makes everything easier. You'll find people who've worked with various photographers and can give honest feedback about their BDSM scene knowledge.

Also worth mentioning that some riggers host private rope salons where photographers come to shoot. Less crowded than public jams. Could be a good middle ground for meeting professionals in a more intimate setting.

One more thing - when you do find someone, consider doing a test shoot with simple bondage first before moving to complex shibari or suspension. Helps you see if you work well together.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread. Really useful for those of us new to rope photography collaborations.
