Real income from shibari modeling

Starting thread: Real income from shibari modeling

I've been curious about the financial realities of shibari modeling and wanted to reach out to people who've actually worked in this space. What does compensation typically look like? I'm wondering how payment varies between different situations like studio sessions with experienced riggers, portfolio building work, workshops, or performance events. Does your rate depend on how long you've been modeling, whether the bondage work is for commercial use versus personal projects, or where you're located? I'd really appreciate hearing honest experiences about what factors affect what you can earn and what the actual working conditions are like for rope models.

Good question. From the rigger side I can tell you that experienced shibari models definitely command higher rates. Commercial work pays way more than practice sessions. Location matters too - major cities with active BDSM communities tend to have better rates.

I've been modeling for about 3 years now. Starting out I did a lot of portfolio building for free or very low rates. Now I charge between 50-150 per hour depending on the session type. Commercial shoots and workshops pay the most. Private practice sessions are usually on the lower end.

Thanks Luna, that's helpful. When you say commercial shoots, what exactly falls into that category? Like bondage photography for publication or something else?

LunaKnots
Oct 13, 2025, 04:54 PM

Yeah exactly - anything that's going to be published or sold. So photo sets, videos, instructional content. Basically if the rigger or photographer is making money from it, you should be getting paid decently too.

The rope bondage scene can be exploitative if you're not careful. Some people want free models for their "portfolio" indefinitely. Set boundaries early.

How do you even get started? I'm interested in shibari modeling but don't know anyone in the scene yet.

Go to local rope jams and munches. Network with experienced riggers. Start with people who have good reputations in the BDSM community. Safety first always.

I do both rope modeling and other BDSM session work. The bondage modeling is actually more physically demanding than people think. You're holding positions for extended periods, suspension can be intense. Make sure you're compensated appropriately for the difficulty level.

SkylerBlue

That makes sense. What about safety protocols? I'd want to know what to expect before agreeing to anything.

Always discuss limits beforehand. Experienced riggers will ask about injuries, flexibility, any health issues. For suspension bondage especially you need someone who really knows what they're doing. DM me if you want more specific advice about vetting people.

What about performing at events? Does that typically pay better than studio work?

Performance work at BDSM events and conventions can pay well but it's inconsistent. You might get 200-500 for a performance but they don't happen every week. Studio work is more reliable income if you build regular clients.

I've been doing shibari modeling for 5 years. The money got better once I specialized. I focus mainly on suspension bondage now and can charge premium rates because not every model is comfortable with that intensity level.

How long did it take you to get comfortable with suspension work Ashlee?

About a year of regular rope work before I tried my first suspension. Started with partial weight bearing, gradually worked up to full suspensions. You really need to trust your rigger and know your body well. The BDSM community is generally good about not rushing people.

What about the west coast versus east coast? I'm in California and wondering if rates differ by region for bondage work.

JakeRigger
Oct 16, 2025, 11:36 PM

Major cities like SF, LA, NYC, Seattle all have active shibari scenes with decent rates. Smaller markets you might struggle to find paid work consistently. The bondage community tends to cluster in more liberal urban areas.

LunaKnots

California probably has some of the best rates honestly. Lots of content creators and professional riggers out there.

I'm curious about the workshop modeling angle. What does that involve exactly?

In BDSM terms, how do you negotiate boundaries?

MariaV

Workshops are when a rigger teaches rope bondage techniques to students. You're basically the demo model while they explain and practice on you. Can be several hours. Usually pays flat rate per workshop rather than hourly.

Got it, thanks!

Workshop modeling is great for beginners actually. You're surrounded by people learning, the rigger is usually very careful and explains everything. Less pressure than a photo shoot.

Does anyone work with international clients? I'm wondering if there's a market for traveling to do shibari sessions or performances.

AshleeRopes
Oct 19, 2025, 01:44 AM

I've done some travel work. Usually they cover expenses plus your day rate. The bondage festival circuit can be lucrative if you build a reputation. DM me if you want to know about specific events.

This is all really helpful everyone. What about rights to images and videos? How do you usually handle that?

On bondage: how did you start?

LunaKnots

Always get it in writing. Specify if it's for personal portfolio only, limited commercial use, or full commercial rights. Your rate should reflect the usage rights. Rope bondage content can get shared widely so protect yourself legally.

JakeRigger
Oct 19, 2025, 07:14 PM

Luna is absolutely right. I always provide a simple contract even for practice sessions. Protects both the model and rigger.

Good luck Skyler. Take your time, vet people carefully, and don't let anyone pressure you into anything you're uncomfortable with in the BDSM space.

What about ongoing arrangements with regular riggers? Is that common in shibari?

AshleeRopes
Oct 20, 2025, 11:34 PM

Very common. I have three regular riggers I work with consistently. We have established rates and they book me weeks in advance. Much better than constantly finding new clients. The trust you build makes the rope bondage better too.

MariaV
Oct 21, 2025, 10:15 AM

Regular arrangements are ideal. You learn each other's styles, limits, preferences. Makes everything smoother.

How do you handle taxes on this kind of income? Assuming people are reporting it properly.

LunaKnots
Oct 21, 2025, 08:24 PM

I report it as independent contractor income. Keep records of all payments, especially for BDSM related work where cash is sometimes involved. Get a tax person who won't judge your line of work.

Mia
Oct 22, 2025, 03:03 AM

Great point about taxes. Hadn't even thought about that aspect yet.

Anyone else find that certain bondage styles pay better? Like kinbaku versus western rope?

JakeRigger
Oct 22, 2025, 09:22 AM

Traditional Japanese shibari tends to be more sought after in my experience, especially for artistic work. But western bondage styles have their market too. Depends on what the client wants.

AshleeRopes
Oct 22, 2025, 04:47 PM

I work in both styles. The traditional kinbaku work tends to be more artsy and pays a bit better for photo projects. Definitely worth learning about the different rope traditions.

Happy to help. The shibari community benefits when models know their worth and work safely.
