Starting thread: How to build bondage portfolio

I want to create a portfolio showcasing my rope bondage work but I'm not sure where to begin. For those of you who have already done this, how did you find willing participants to collaborate with? Building trust seems crucial here, especially at the beginning. I'm also curious about the technical side - what's the most effective way to capture and display shibari work? Should I focus on photography, use video formats, or explore other options? If anyone has been through this process, I'd appreciate hearing about common pitfalls you encountered or insights you gained along the way that might save me some trouble.

What would you recommend for someone just starting to document their work?

Start with local munches and rope jams. That's where I found my first models for portfolio shoots. People are way more willing to collaborate when they've seen your work in person and know you're serious about safety. For shibari photography, I'd say stills are better than video at first - easier to control lighting and composition. Natural light works great if you don't have studio equipment yet.

Are you planning to be the rigger or the model in these shoots? Just asking because the approach is pretty different depending on which side of the rope you're on.

I'm the rigger. I've been practicing bondage techniques for about two years now but mostly with the same partner. Want to expand and document different styles and body types.

Document everything with consent forms. Seriously. Before you even think about building a portfolio, make sure you have written agreements about how images can be used. I've seen too many BDSM portfolios turn into drama because this step was skipped. Also consider if your models want to be identifiable or prefer faces hidden. DM me if you want a template I use.

What kind of shibari do you specialize in? Floor work, suspension, decorative? That might affect how you shoot it.

Mostly floor work and partial suspension so far. Still building up to full suspensions - want to make sure I'm absolutely solid on safety before I document those.

On bondage: how did you start?

Smart approach on the safety front. For portfolio building in bondage work I'd suggest shooting in black and white at first. Really makes the rope lines pop and puts focus on the technique rather than other distractions. Also network with photographers who already shoot in the kink community - many are looking for skilled riggers to collaborate with.
